Protect Your Online Financial Transactions

In today's world, if you are looking to increase your personal or business banking security, it is important to stay current. To assist you in that, here are some of the latest online best practices for online banking.

  • Use a current browser that supports the latest in secure and private transactions.
  • Install and regularly update virus-detection software.
  • Do not allow unauthorized users access to your PC.
  • Do not install pirated software or software from an unknown source.
  • Use a personal or business designed firewall.
  • Do not open email attachments from unknown sources.
  • Protect your IDs and passwords; create passwords that do not use readily identifiable information like names, birthdates and phone numbers.
  • When going to a banking website, check the site's URL address to make sure that it matches the company's URL, and look for misspelled words or other signs that it may be “spoofed.”
  • Do not share your password.
  • Never make online financial transactions via unfamiliar sites and/or institutions. Thieves often set up fake sites to steal money or your login information.
  • Never access your bank accounts at a computer not owned by you. Key-logging software can easily be loaded on Internet Café computers, thereby defeating all of your security IDs, including passwords and Passmark ID.
  • If using a network, ensure that all connections are properly secured.
  • Regularly review your account, and notify the bank immediately if you discover any changes in your account information.

Additional information on securing your home or business computer can be found at the National Cyber Security Alliance's Stay Safe Online website. The site address is www.staysafeonline.com.
