What is EMV - Chip Technology?

Chip Technology – originally developed by Europay, MasterCard®, Visa® (EMV) – is a global standard for debit cards that utilize computer chips to authenticate and secure card transactions. This enhanced security feature will make your debit card transactions more secure.

Are chip-enabled cards more secure?

Yes, chip cards make in-person transactions more secure. It adds another layer of security by making it more difficult to replicate card data. When you use your card at a chip-activated reader, the chip will generate a unique code for each transaction. This prevents stolen data from being fraudulently used to make a counterfeit card.

How do I establish or change my Personal Identification Number (PIN)?

To establish or change your PIN for your NDBT debit card, call (866) 985-2273 and follow voice prompts through the process to change or establish your PIN. You can always visit one of our banking centers conveniently located in Dallas, Las Colinas, Addison, Plano and Frisco.

When will I be prompted for a Personal Identification Number (PIN)?

Your Personal Identification Number (PIN) is required for ATM transactions. For purchase transactions, you will be prompted to enter your PIN or to provide a signature as you normally would to verify the transaction. You will find that more merchants require a PIN to verify transactions.

How do I make a purchase using the chip?

Insert the chip portion of your card into the reader with the chip facing up. Leave your card in the reader. Follow the prompts on the screen. You may be asked to enter your PIN or provide a signature. Remember to take your card after your transaction is complete.

What if the merchant doesn’t have a chip-activated reader?

No problem. Just swipe your card using the magnetic stripe.

How does the chip card work for online and telephone transactions?

Your Internet and telephone transactions will work just as they do today.

What information is stored on the chip?

The embedded chip stores only the information required to process a transaction. No personal information is stored on the chip.

What if I swipe my chip card at a merchant accepting chip cards?

You will be prompted by the reader to insert your chip instead.

Are there any additional fees or costs associated with my chip card?
